Let's Call It Fame Power

There’s a certain force that exists in this world that forms as a great part of why certain things work how they do. It has nothing to do with physics and has no business with math. It doesn’t make the world go round but it sure does make it move to a certain rhythm.

Who holds this power?

We love them. We hate them. We watch their every move. What’s the world without their existence? They are the mini gods roaming the earth. They unknowingly dictate and control the day to day running of everyday life with things we call trends. They are called celebrities.

How do I know they have the power?

Picture this, I start selling cars the same day Rihanna starts selling cars. We both have little experience with automobile engineering but all my other factors are more favorable. Who do you think would sell more cars? Obviously, she would and this would solely be based on the fact that ‘she is Rihanna’.

What is it?

Let’s call it fame power. It’s not peer-pressure but it’s similar. Celebrities don’t make us idolize them but for some reason we are inclined to. We want to look like them, wear what they wear and dress how they dress. Their style and looks are regarded as superior and their being messed with can’t go unpunished. They basically run the world. Not to mention the fact that they are stalked just so we can gather information on what’s going on in their personal life. Why exactly do people need or even want to know things about people we don’t even personally know? What’s the big deal? Most of the time what they do or say has no direct effect on us. So why do we care so much about their personal lives. That aside, why do we let what they do in their free time have such a huge impact on most of our own lives.

Why is this power theirs?

They have huge platforms because they are followed by a lot of people on social media since they are well known from their work. Their platforms reach a really wide range of people, so it has the space to create more impact. If I have 60 followers and most of my followers (eg.55) are ready to see what I have to offer, and I am competing with a celebrity with 200million followers-who would probably have at least quarter(ie.50million) standing with him- I don't stand a chance. In the past these followers can be compared to people who stand with certain leaders(e.g Martin Luther King Jnr and Adolf Hitler)

This power can be used for good or evil

Now let’s talk about ways fame power can be used. Platforms like that of Michelle and Barack Obama educate and enlighten the public and others either do the opposite or none of the above. I’m not going to get into

whose or what platforms in my opinion preach and impact negativity-apart from well brewing up a whole world war- but I will state that the platforms that ignore world issues completely, rather than addressing them are not just bad but are also displaying folly-an act of foolishness- because they indirectly encourage people to ignore matters that either directly or indirectly affect them and even convince some that world issues don’t exist. I’m not saying they are the only reasons for this, I am saying they are a huge part. I believe them not saying anything is them saying something they don’t know they are saying.

How can they keep using it for good?

I won’t dictate when, how or exactly where those with fame power should use it but I will state areas that their voices could address that would be extremely beneficial.

Talking about

things like mental health, fighting systemic racism, colorism, injustice in general and normalized sexual abuse, making an active effort to help as a global citizen (ie. doing things like donating and raising awareness about petitions or platforms for donations-maybe for starving children) and sharing it on their platform to raise awareness are ways

of using their power for good.

Some celebrities nowadays do this. They address, fight for and give aid when it comes to world issues and that has informed, enlightened and helped so many people. Them taking a step forward to be better global citizens has helped fight some of the world’s toughest vices. This is the use rather than abuse that the world needs to see.
